I think my stock broker is mowing your lawn
Fort Collins, CO – You have a comfortable house in the historic district of town, a thriving stock brokerage business, a wife of 8 years, and a child on the way, would you risk all that for an idea, for an ideal?

If your name is Kelly Giard, the answer is yes. At age 34, Kelly started looking into the idea of an environmentally friendly lawn mowing service. Everyone thought he was crazy; a stock broker mowing lawns? And why now? Instead of filling a college fund, he was filling his garage with electric lawn mowers, tractors, and solar panels.

Growing up, Kelly had been that neighborhood kid knocking on doors to mow lawns. At age 15 he had a thriving lawn business in Walla Walla, Washington. Who knew that 20 years later, he would be starting a national lawn care franchise?

Clean Air Lawn Care is a lawn maintenance company that uses clean equipment including electric mowers, edgers and blowers as well as 36’ walk-behinds and ride-on mowers using biodiesel fuel. The company trucks have mounted solar panels to charge the electric equipment during the workday. The equipment is clean, quiet and strong enough to get the job done. The entire business is carbon neutral. The EPA estimates that 5% of all air pollution is from lawn mowers.

In the summer of 2006, Kelly decided to start Clean Air Lawn Care in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was amazing to him that no one else was doing this, but some days the reason for that was very clear. The idea was solid but some of the equipment wasn’t. After finding the right equipment, then modifying the business plan and fine tuning the logistics of scheduling, he proved a successful business model.

What next? Prove the business model in 8 other markets, and another child of course. Just after Jack Giard was born, Kelly was flying from Seattle to New York to Austin. Now in November 2007, Clean Air Lawn Care has 9 offices across the country, employs 20 people, and has a partnership agreement with Black and Decker including joint marketing as well as product development. The business has been showcased on the Fine Living Network and in major publications such as the Denver Post and CBS News in Boston.

As Giard begins franchising in December of 2007, Clean Air Lawn Care will be popping up in cities across the nation. He plans to change the way America mows the lawn.

New green company looking to franchise in Charlotte
Charlotte, NC – Clean Air Lawn Care, a new environmentally friendly lawn maintenance business is looking to open franchises in progressive areas where people are concerned about their quality of life, and Charlotte fits the bill. “This is our first year franchising and we selected Charlotte as one of the top 25 target areas in the country. The people of Charlotte care about their community, and this business is committed to improving air quality in our communities.” Said Kelly Giard, the company’s C.E.O..

Clean Air Lawn Care is a lawn maintenance company that uses clean electric and biodiesel powered equipment. The vehicles that haul this equipment have mounted solar panels which are used to charge the electric equipment during the workday. The equipment is clean and quiet; the business is carbon neutral.

In 2007, the Colorado-based company opened 8 locations across the country including Seattle, Portland, Denver, Boulder, Austin, Salt Lake City, Boston and New York. “The business could have continued to grow at the rate of 5-10 additional cities a year, but that scale just isn’t large enough to change the $11-20 billion dollar lawn care industry”, said Giard. “Franchising is the only viable business model if we want to make a difference.”

With waiting lists forming to get franchise rights in many of the new target areas this winter, it is clear the time is now for this business. There is a heightened awareness of our environment right now and regardless of your opinion on global warming, most people think that less air pollution is a good thing. Less air pollution, less dependency on foreign oil - there’s no reason no to do it.

Did you know …..
• Small engines, in particular 2-stroke engines used in conventional lawn care equipment, contribute to 10-12% of the nation’s air pollution.
• In one hour, one gas lawn mower can pollute as much as an SUV driven 23,600 miles.
• In 2007, Clean Air Lawn Care reduced emissions of well over 100,000 pounds of CO2 and 200 lbs of NOx into the atmosphere.

Differentiation in a commoditized landscaping industry
Fort Collins, CO – Lawn mowing has become a highly commoditized business, the only differentiation between companies is breadth and quality of service, but that is about to change.

Clean Air Lawn Care is a lawn maintenance company that uses clean equipment including electric mowers, edgers and blowers as well as 36’ walk-behinds and ride-on mowers using biodiesel fuel. The vehicles that haul the electric equipment have mounted solar panels which are used to charge the equipment during the workday. The equipment is clean, quiet and strong enough to get the job done. The entire business is carbon neutral.

Clean Air Lawn Care is doing more than meeting the needs of a short term fad. Regardless of public opinion on global warming, most people do not like air pollution or noise pollution. This new business plans to make some waves in the landscaping industry as it begins franchising in November of 2007.

In 2006, the company proved that it had a viable business model in Fort Collins, Colorado. In 2007, successful satellite offices opened up in 8 additional cities across the country: Seattle, Portland, Denver, Boulder, Austin, Salt Lake City, Boston and New York. “The business could have continued to grow at the rate of 5-10 additional cities a year, but that scale just isn’t large enough to make a change in the lawn care industry”, said Giard. “In the next several years you should see Clean Air Lawn Care popping up in every city across the nation.”

The EPA estimates that 5% of all air pollution comes from lawn mowers. The number rises to 10-12% from all 2-stroke small engines. Clean Air Lawn care plans to change the way America mows the lawn.
